Statement by Environmental Defence’s Tim Gray on the public bailout of Kinder Morgan

Toronto, Ont. – The federal government’s commitment to bailout the Kinder Morgan pipeline is a totally inappropriate use of public money. Building  this pipeline flouts Canada’s commitment to Indigenous rights and reconciliation, and the expansion of oil production to fill the pipeline is inconsistent with Canada’s climate commitments.

Polling shows that Canadians do not support government investment in this pipeline.  Government guarantees to Kinder Morgan shareholders are at odds with the commitment to reduce fossil fuel subsidies and promises to fix the energy project review process. It also adds weight to recent revelations that the decision to approve the project was made before a full analysis of possible impacts was completed.

Instead of investing in a oil pipeline, Canada needs to invest in creating a clean economy.
