THE PROBLEM
In 2019, the Alberta government launched a politically motivated “Public Inquiry into Anti-Alberta Energy Campaigns.” Environmental Defence was one of many organizations that were investigated by the inquiry. Commissioner Steve Allan submitted the inquiry’s final report to the Alberta Government on July 31, 2021. The report must be released publicly within 90 days.
The Solution
Environmental Defence was offered a preview of the inquiry’s final report which stated that all our activities detailed in the report are fully legal. We also saw that the report claims that any group that questions the role of fossil fuels in Canada’s future is branded as Anti-Alberta. That’s why we’re calling out the Alberta inquiry for what it is – an anti-democratic tactic used to intimate and silence opposition to fossil fuel expansion.
