PARRY SOUND – Waubuno Beach will join a prestigious list of international beaches that meet stringent criteria for water quality, environmental management and education, and safety. The Parry Sound beach and 23 others in Canada will receive Blue Flag status this summer, joining about 4,000 beaches in 48 countries with the designation. “The Blue Flag is an international symbol of excellence and a source of pride for local communities,” said Brett Tryon, Blue Flag Canada program manager. “No matter where you go, when you see a Blue Flag flying, you know you are at one of the best beaches or marinas in the world – one that is clean, has excellent facilities, and meets high safety and environmental standards.” Parry Sound will raise the blue flag with a full schedule of events next Wednesday, June 11. The day will begin with coffee and registration at 9 a.m., followed by a host of speakers throughout the day. The official flag raising will take place at 2:30 p.m. The agenda includes presentations from Environmental Defense Canada, the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, a presentation about the endangered piping plover, on the DNA testing of sand and water, and a discussion on beach safety from the Lifesaving Society of Canada. The Blue Flag award is administered in Canada by Environmental Defence and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education.
