About The Backgrounder:

Environmental Defence’s tracking of fossil fuel industry lobbyists reveals that Big Oil had at least 986 meetings with the federal government in 2025, nearly four per working day. With the federal election early in 2025, the fossil fuel lobby acted quickly to pressure the new government to grant its wishlist of environmental and climate policy rollbacks. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers lobbied the government at least 138 times, the most active lobbyist in the industry, opposing each federal climate regulation. Minister for Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, met with more fossil fuel lobbyist than any other elected official, taking at least 63 lobby meetings since being appointed to his position in May.
