Join Environmental Defence and Don’t Mess with the Don on May 12 to Witness Beverage Container Haul from 2026 Don River Litter Cleanups

Photo opportunity: Kayaking cleanup at Biidaasige Park on Ontario’s Day of Action on Litter to demonstrate need for deposit-return program to prevent waste and litter   

Toronto | Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat – In honour of Ontario’s Day of Action on Litter, Environmental Defence and Don’t Mess with the Don are organizing a beverage container litter pickup in the Don River at Biidaasige Park in downtown Toronto.

WHAT: Kayaking cleanup of the mouth of the Don River to highlight the problem of beverage container litter in one of Toronto’s most important renaturalization sites.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 12 (Ontario Day of Action on Litter)

WHERE: Biidaasige Park, at the mouth of Toronto’s Don River

Schedule:

10:30 am – meet at Old Fire Hall on Commissioners St. at Munition St. in Biidaasige

10:35 to 11:00 am – witness the kayakers completing a river litter pickup and returning to the kayak landing spot (at the river bend south of the Old Fire Hall)

11:15 am – comments from a member of Toronto City Council (TBD); and spokespeople from Don’t Mess with the Don and Environmental Defence to present findings from 2026 litter cleanups along the Don River and highlight how an expansion of Ontario’s deposit-return program is key to litter prevention.
