Statement by Tim Gray, Executive Director of Environmental Defence on the release of the draft Regional Transportation Plan by Metrolinx
Toronto, Ont. – Environmental Defence congratulates Metrolinx on the release of the draft Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) that moves the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) towards a clean, electric regional public transit system. The Agency is taking action to achieve healthy communities by supporting transit investment to connect our growing cities.
For too long, highway driven development has fueled sprawl and led to the debilitating congestion on our roads today. The draft RTP prioritizes building a regional public transit system that moves the majority of people in our cities to work and home quickly, and reduces gridlock by providing more mobility options.
Over the past four years, the province has taken important steps towards creating sustainable cities across the GTHA by revising the Growth Plan, creating the Climate Change Action Plan, Long Term Affordable Housing Plan, Long Term Infrastructure Plan and renewing Greenbelt protection. Thankfully, we now have the missing transportation piece to build a sustainable region, move our economy, create livable cities and clean the air.
