Eight-Year-Old Penelope’s Election Campaign Launches at Queen’s Park Today
Aims to increase environmental awareness during provincial election
Toronto, ON – On Thursday, September 1st at 10:30AM at Queen’s Park, Environmental Defence will be launching Penelope4Ontario.ca, a non-partisan campaign centred on Penelope, an eight-year-old girl who will be touring the province asking Ontarians to vote for her future on October 6th. She is also asking the party leaders to protect clean air and water, green energy and the Greenbelt.  She will be unveiling a report card on the party environmental platforms once all have been released.
“We simply cannot leave worrying about the future to politicians,” said Penelope. “My campaign will make sure the environment is on the top of the agenda this provincial election. Us kids have our future to think about.”

Through Penelope4ontario.ca, Environmental Defence intends to educate Ontarians about the environmental issues in this election, in order to ensure a greener, healthier and prosperous life for future generations of kids and adults in Ontario.
“We have made some great strides in this province when it comes to environmental leadership,” said Dr. Rick Smith, Executive Director of Environmental Defence. “This includes a world-class Greenbelt that protects forests, wetlands and prime agriculture, a cosmetic pesticide ban that keeps our water safe and green energy policy that positions us as a world leader in the clean energy future. These are great things for our kids to inherit and that’s why we are supporting Penelope’s campaign.”
The campaign website, Penelope4Ontario.ca, features Penelope’s campaign video, documenting her tour of Ontario. It will also feature a report card of parties’ environmental commitments once all the parties have released their platforms. Site visitors can pledge their votes for the environment, because “you can’t really vote for a kid, but you can vote for her future.” Penelope will continue her Ontario tour from September 1 – October 5, where she will be making speaking appearances, meeting the public, and handing out campaign buttons. The complete schedule will be available at Penelope4Ontario.ca.
