(Markham) Today Environmental Defence delivered 545 postcards from voters in the swing riding of Oak Ridges Markham to the Member of Parliament, Paul Calandra. The postcards ask Mr. Calandra to do more to combat global warming. 545 was the margin of victory in the riding in the last federal election.
“We’ve been out talking to voters in the riding and are finding a lot of concern for the future of their kids and a strong desire for their elected officials to act,” said Harry Pilfold, a local organizer with Environmental Defence.
Oak Ridges Markham is part of a bigger swing riding push by Environmental Defence and other groups in advance of the UN climate summit in Copenhagen opening on December 7.
“Canada is one of the top 10 global warming polluters in the world, and our government is falling behind other countries making the transition to the clean energy economy,” said Pilfold. “As voters in a swing riding, the citizens of Oak Ridges Markham are coveted by all political parties, and they are saying they want action on global warming.”
