About The Submission:
In this open letter to the Prime Minister, eight leading environmental organizations address shortfalls in regulations related to the new federal impact assessment regime. We have been working on the update and modernization of federal impact assessment process since the review begin in 2016, and we believe the now-passed Bill C-69 improves our current, broken environmental laws and strikes a balance among competing interests. However, the proposed Regulations Designating Physical Activities (Project List) would not only fail to restore impact assessment oversight to the vast majority of projects within federal jurisdiction; the regulations would in fact reduce it. This must be addressed in order to fulfill the federal government’s promises and mandate on reforming environmental laws.
