About The Letter:
On behalf of 47 organizations representing 2 million people in Canada, we are writing to express our collective opposition to the introduction of new tax policy designed to extend subsidies for enhanced oil recovery. Specifically, Energy Future Forum — a partnership which includes most of the major oil companies in Canada — has been lobbying for a new federal tax equivalent to the 45Q tax credit in the United States. Experience from the United States shows that such a tax credit could result in a significant amount of foregone revenue and enable the production of more carbon than is captured. This tax credit is a win for the fossil fuel industry but will negatively impact Canada’s climate credibility globally.
