About The Backgrounder:
Wetlands are essential for water purification, flood prevention, carbon storage, and maintaining biodiversity. However, over 72% of Southern Ontario’s original wetlands have been lost, and their destruction continues to accelerate due to weakened protection policies. These ecosystems play a critical role in sustaining natural processes and supporting plant and animal species, including those at risk. To preserve these invaluable resources, the Ontario government must implement and enforce stronger policies to protect wetlands from further degradation and loss.
