About the backgrounder:
Electrification is set to take centre stage at COP31, where the Presidency's "35 by 35" Global Electrification Pledge will anchor the agenda and help advance the global transition away from fossil fuels, building on the momentum of previous COPs and the Santa Marta conference. Countries will also be expected to confront the emissions gap between their current climate plans and the cuts needed to meet global targets. Canada, however, risks a credibility gap at the talks, as Prime Minister Carney's emphasis on fossil fuel expansion, continued fossil fuel subsidies and rollbacks of climate policy sit uneasily with the direction of the negotiations.
