The Oil and Gas industry is counting on your silence – that’s why your direct phone call can really make a difference. Place a call to Prime Minister Trudeau and let him know that you want a strong emissions cap on the fossil fuel industry.
Check out some talking points to help make your call a success:
First:
- Introduce yourself as a concerned citizen.
- Let them know that you’re calling because an ambitious and strong emissions cap on oil and gas is important to you. Consider sharing your fears, hopes, vision for a climate-stable future and/or the opportunities you see from taking climate action.
- Thank them for showing leadership for committing to create a strong emissions cap to hold the oil and gas sector accountable for their pollution. Reinforce that it is important to you that Canada has taken this big step forward on climate change. However, the emissions cap needs to be done correctly.
Suggested Talking Points:
- Ask them to fulfill the federal government’s promise to cap and cut oil and gas emissions, and hold the oil and gas industry accountable for their pollution.
- The oil and gas industry must be held at the same level as the rest of the country. This means that oil and gas emissions need to, at the very least, be reduced by 40-45 % by 2030.
- Canada can’t afford any more delays on this key policy, nor can we afford to let the oil and gas industry delay reaching the emissions reduction targets. Oil and gas industry must meet its targets by 2030 if we are to meet our climate commitments.
- The emissions cap needs to be a step forward. The oil and gas sector must be held accountable for reducing their own emissions. They can not be let off the hook by using their vast amounts of money to purchase offsets for reductions elsewhere.
- An oil and gas emissions policy, if implemented correctly, could be a key tool to tackle Canada’s largest growing source of emissions. Therefore, all emissions relating to the production of oil and gas should be included, including LNG, which is as bad of an emitter as coal due to the release of methane.
- The federal government can’t back down now. With a strong emissions cap we can guarantee that Canada does its fair share on a global scale to keep global temperatures to below 1.5 degrees.
- The federal government has a choice to make. Will it prioritize the profits of the oil and gas industry, or will it prioritize the health and future of Canadians? The choice it makes will be the legacy it leaves behind.
