The Problem
Canada is falling behind on reducing transportation emissions. We continue to make our neighbourhoods car-dependent instead of investing in public transit and infrastructure that prioritizes walking and cycling. On top of that, the auto industry is lobbying hard against regulations that would help more people access affordable electric vehicles (EVs). Their priority is to keep profiting from rising emissions by selling more and more gas-guzzling vehicles.
The Solution
Canada needs to move forward with the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, which would get more EVs on the road and lower their cost by up to 2 per cent. But electric vehicles are only one part of the solution. Canada also needs to reduce car dependency by investing in infrastructure that supports dense, walkable, transit-oriented communities.
