The Problem:
Companies are adding tiny plastic beads, called microbeads, to products for exfoliation or to add sparkle. However, millions of these beads are creating an ugly mess in our waterways. Not only are they polluting the water, but they also adsorb (hold molecules of toxic chemicals on the surface) and leach toxic chemicals which eventually end up in our food chain.
Solutions:
Several U.S. states have already banned microbeads. We’re working to see the same thing in Ontario and across Canada. We’re also educating the public on how to avoid microbeads while shopping.
There a number of things you can do to help keep microbeads out of our waterways.
2. Avoid microbeads while you shop.
Look at the ingredient list and avoid any product that contains polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and nylon.
3. Dispose of products safely.
Dispose of personal care products containing microbeads properly by dropping them off at local depots and municipal programs that accept hazardous household waste. Do not pour the products down the drain.
