About The Report:
The decline of conventional sources of oil and gas is spurring a shift to sources that are more difficult to extract such as shale gas and tar sands oil. This is causing an increase in the use of new technologies to access these energy sources, and in some cases harmful chemicals are used. This petition is in regards to the use of chemicals for hydraulic fracturing or fracking of rock to access shale gas and the use of solvents for in situ tar sands extraction. In both cases, chemicals are injected into the ground to help access a fossil fuel resource.
