About the Renewables-Ready 2026 pledge:
Toronto's electricity needs are growing rapidly, and the city has an opportunity to build a cleaner, more affordable energy future.
Environmental Defence Canada and Toronto East Residents for Renewable Energy are calling on candidates in Toronto's 2026 municipal election to support the Renewables-Ready Toronto pledge, which calls for expanding local clean energy solutions like rooftop and balcony solar, smart grid, and energy efficiency, while reducing the city's reliance on polluting gas-fired electricity.
The pledge asks the future Mayor and City Council members to champion local renewable energy, strengthen Toronto Hydro's role in supporting clean energy solutions, and phase out electricity generation at the Portlands Energy Centre gas plant by 2035 or sooner.
