Welcome to the 2024 Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival! Now in its 27th year, this well-loved event attracts visitors from Toronto, Durham Region and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area – and even beyond! The festival offers a great opportunity to discover the many things that make Sunderland special, while celebrating the time-honoured Canadian tradition of making maple syrup.

Our maple syrup farmers are proud to carry on producing the “liquid gold” that has been enjoyed since the 17th and 18th centuries. Back then, sap from maple trees was boiled down in iron and copper kettles. What a difference a century or two makes! Nowadays, modern processing makes the job much more efficient. Let's bust the myth that a huge property, endless time, and expensive materials are required to grow food and support pollinators. See how Carly uses upcycled goods, untraditional growing mediums, and native plants at her suburban homestead in Uxbridge to build edible gardens!

Join Carly from 1-2 p.m. in the Young Adult Department, this is a drop-in lecture so come a few minutes early to guarantee your spot!

A rare celestial phenomenon is on its way! A total solar eclipse will occur on April 8th between 2 and 4:30PM. Most of Durham will experience a partial eclipse, where the sun isn't completely covered, but areas East of Clarington will experience total coverage with the peak around 3:20PM.

Safety note: looking at an eclipse without proper equipment can cause retinal burn, blurred vision, and loss of eyesight. Regular sunglasses are not adequate protection.

Ground yourself in the moment with some crafting and colouring. Some supplies will be available, such as colouring sheets, watercolour paints, sewing supplies and more. Feel free to bring your own supplies and projects as well.

The Writing Project Series is intended for writers who want to produce a collection of poetry or short stories but don’t know where to begin. Each month from March to September, we will unpack a different stage of the writing process from drafting to publication, all while you work on your manuscript. The series culminates in your work being featured in a published anthology that will be added to the library's collection! *

This presentation highlights best practices for successfully growing culinary herbs in your garden, whether it be in containers or in your garden bed. Tips for harvesting, methods of preserving and other culinary uses are also discussed.

About the presenter: Leah Kuhne joined Durham Master Gardeners in 2022 motivated by her love of plants and gardening. As a Master Gardener in Training, Leah draws on her lifelong backyard gardening skills and is expanding her horticultural knowledge through the University of Guelph. Leah is a Food Scientist and Red Seal Chef and loves to combine her knowledge of food with fruit, vegetable and herb gardening to make lots of homegrown meals and preserves.
