Where does Canada rank with renewables?
The renewable energy roll out continues to pick up pace around the world. In 2025, for the first time, solar and wind energy generated more power than coal.
China remains the leader in clean energy growth, having built out more solar and wind than the rest of the world combined.
Where does Canada rank?
Although Canada’s electricity grid is relatively clean, given the large amount of hydro power, the build out of solar and wind power has been slow.
Solar and wind now make up 9 per cent of Canada’s electricity grid. Check out how that compares to other countries:

What does this mean for Canada?
This is bad news for Canadians given that renewable energy is the least expensive source of electricity. It’s far less expensive than fossil gas or nuclear which some Canadian premiers would like to double down on.
It’s time for Canada to stop lagging behind, so that we too can benefit from harnessing the plentiful energy that comes from the sun and wind.
