Statement from Sam Hersh, Clean Transportation Program Manager

Ottawa | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People – As governments debate whether or not to maintain the 100 per cent tariff on Chinese EVs, it’s important to focus on the real outcome Canadians need: affordable electric vehicles, a strong domestic auto sector, and rapid progress on climate action.

This is exactly why Canada’s Electric Vehicle Availability Standard (EVAS) is so important. The EVAS ensures automakers sell enough EVs in Canada and gives them a strong incentive to offer lower-cost models. If the standard is enforced and strengthened, Canadians won’t need Chinese EVs to fill the affordability gap.

High upfront costs remain one of the biggest barriers preventing Canadians from switching to EVs. A blanket 100 per cent tariff continues to risk insulating automakers from competition without guaranteeing more affordability. We need to diversify trade beyond the United States and ensure our auto sector is competitive globally, not protected indefinitely.

A balanced approach to tariffs paired with strong domestic policy would be good for consumers, good for our climate and bolster our industry. This approach can protect Canadian workers, encourage real investment in affordable EVs, and ensure our auto sector is part of the transition, not sitting it out.

Background:

  • In 2023, Canada introduced the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard, requiring automakers to increase the share of EVs they sell and fully phase out new gas powered cars by 2035.
  • The policy would cut 135 million tonnes of pollution, lower EV prices by about 20%, and expand charging infrastructure by ensuring a steady, reliable EV supply.
  • The standard is meant to fix issues like long wait times, limited inventory and high prices to give consumers more choice and move EVs away from being confined to just the luxury market.
  • In September 2025, as a result of pressure from the auto industry and American tariffs, the government paused the 2026 targets for the Standard and issued a consultation period.
