Re: Kick polluters out of the Canada Pavilion

Civil society organizations are concerned about oil, gas and petrochemical companies being given event space at the first-ever COP Canada Pavilion. We are formally requesting that the Canada Pavilion cancel the Nov. 11 Pathways Alliance Event and all events featuring participation by oil, gas or petrochemical companies. 

Industries aligned with climate action are welcomed in event programming, and there are many of these companies present at COP27. However, oil and gas companies, like those active within the Pathways Alliance, have been the biggest obstacle to climate action — both at COP and back in Canada, and for decades now have made their fortunes while millions around the world suffer the tragedies of climate impacts.

Oil and gas companies are touting themselves as climate leaders, while in fact their activities continue to erode the rights and negatively impact the health and culture of Indigenous communities, notably through trillions of liters of toxic waste stored in tailings “ponds.” Companies keep pointing to carbon capture and storage — despite the technology’s decades-long track record of underperformance and failure. And even if the technology did work, carbon capture would do nothing about the environmental harm caused to Indigenous nations at the frontlines of oil and gas extraction. Carbon capture cannot address the 80%-90% of emissions that are emitted when the oil and gas they pump out of the ground gets burned. The industry isn’t interested in carbon capture to reduce emissions — it’s about greenwashing its plans to continue producing fossil fuels for decades to come.

Platforming these companies at the Canada Pavilion is harmful for our global reputation. The net-zero recommendations from the UN expert body chaired by former Minister of the Environment Catherine McKenna were clear: “You cannot be a net-zero leader while continuing to build or invest in fossil fuel supply.”

We call on the government of Canada and those charged with managing the Canada Pavilion to heed this call, and remove any future events featuring oil, gas, and petrochemical companies from the official Pavilion schedule of events.

Lettre au nom de organisations au ministre de l’Environnement du Canada, Steven Guilbeault : Sortons les pollueurs du pavillon du Canada

Cher Ministre Guilbeault,

CC: Francis Pigeon, Directeur exécutif – Pavillon du Canada à la CdP27

Au nom de la société civile, nous sommes inquiets de constater tout l’espace qui est accordé aux compagnies pétrolières  au premier pavillon du Canada à la CdP. Nous demandons officiellement au pavillon du Canada d’annuler l’événement de Pathways Alliance le 11 novembre et tous les événements subséquents impliquant la participation des compagnies pétrolières.

Les industries qui s’alignent avec l’action climatique sont les bienvenues à programmer leurs événements et plusieurs de ces compagnies sont présentes à la CdP27. Toutefois, les compagnies pétrolières comme celles actives au sein de Pathways Alliance, ont représenté le plus grand obstacle à l’action climatique – autant à la CdP qu’au Canada – et depuis des décennies, elles ont fait fortune pendant que des millions de personnes à travers le monde souffrent de tragédies liées aux changements climatiques.

Ces compagnies se vantent d’être des leaders environnementaux, alors qu’en réalité leurs activités continuent de menacer les droits, la santé et la culture des communautés autochtones, notamment à travers mille milliards de litres de déchets toxiques stockés dans des bassins de décantation. Elles continuent de présenter la capture et le stockage du carbone comme une solution à la crise environnementale, et ce, malgré les décennies de sous-performance et d’échec de la technologie. Bien que cette technologie ait fonctionné par le passé, la capture du carbone ne va rien faire à propos des dommages environnementaux causés aux peuples autochtones, qui se trouvent aux lignes de front de l’extraction pétrolière. La capture du carbone ne peut pas régler les 80%-90% des émissions qui surviennent lorsque les gaz extraits du sol brûlent. L’industrie n’est pas intéressée à la capture du carbone pour réduire les émissions de GES – il est plutôt question de dissimuler leurs plans de produire des combustibles fossiles pour les décennies à venir.

Fournir une plateforme à ces compagnies au pavillon du Canada est nuisible pour notre réputation internationale. La recommandation « net-zero » de l’organisme d’experts des Nations Unies, présidé par l’ancienne Ministre de l’Environnement Catherine McKenna, était claire : « Vous ne pouvez pas être un “net-zero leader” tout en continuant de construire ou d’investir dans les réserves de combustibles fossiles. »

Nous appelons le gouvernement du Canada et les responsables du pavillon du Canada à prendre conscience de cette situation et retirer tous les événements futurs impliquant les compagnies pétrolières de l’horaire officiel du Pavillon.
