For Immediate Release: September 18, 2019
Ottawa, ON – Next Monday, September 23, Environmental Defence will be in New York City for U.N. Secretary General António Guterres’s Climate Summit. The Summit is an opportunity for countries that have signed the Paris Agreement to increase the ambition of their climate plans, building momentum for next year’s climate negotiations.
In particular, Environmental Defence will be watching for announcements that more countries, multilateral institutions, and the private sector will be taking bigger steps to move away from fossil fuel development. The coal, oil, and natural gas projects already in place or being built will take the world past the danger threshold of a 1.5 degree increase in global temperature. In order to keep within that temperature limit, which would significantly reduce the damage caused by a warming climate, new fossil fuel projects will have to be rejected and existing ones retired.
National Climate Program Manager Dale Marshall will also be participating in the New York Climate Strike on Friday, September 20, 2019.
