Statement by Environmental Defence’s Dale Marshall on the federal NDP motion to be voted on today that calls for federal government support for renewable energy, just transition, and an end to fossil fuel subsidies

Ottawa, Ont. – This opposition motion, titled Global Climate Change and Clean Energy Leadership, describes the action that governments everywhere in Canada need to take to position the country for the clean economy of today and tomorrow.

Prioritizing clean, renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies will allow Canada to take advantage of the vast economic opportunities that exist already. Establishing just transition programs for workers and communities will allow a highly skilled workforce to find good, well-paying, and sustainable jobs. And eliminating government subsidies and bailouts for fossil fuel projects will prevent both public and private financing for fossil fuel energy projects that will either be stranded when demand declines, or contribute to climate chaos if it does not.

Environmental Defence will continue to work with all federal parties to develop strong policy proposals for moving the country in the right direction, economically and environmentally.
