Toronto, Ont. – Environmental Defence congratulates Doug Ford on being elected the next premier of Ontario.

We are encouraged by Mr. Ford’s commitment to clean water and clean air, and to reign in polluters. Ontario is a leader in clean energy, clean technology, and clean jobs. We cannot cede this leadership position and the jobs and economic opportunities that go with it. We encourage the new government to invest in the benefits that a clean economy can offer to the people of Ontario.

We look forward to working with this government to forge a made-in-Ontario strategy to fight climate change, something that Mr. Ford said he believes in, and will address. Ontario must stay on track to meet the province’s climate change targets, which are enshrined in law.

Mr. Ford has committed to increased policing of major polluters. Ontario does not have a good track record when it comes to the enforcement of environmental laws. Greater efforts in this area will be welcomed.

On clean water, Ontario is home to 20 per cent of the world’s surface fresh water. We cannot take that fresh water for granted. We must continue to protect the Great Lakes and the rest of Ontario’s fresh water from the threats posed by nutrient pollution, climate change, invasive species and plastic pollution. And more work is needed to ensure that all Ontarians, including those in remote communities and on reserves, have access to safe drinking water.

Finally, we are glad that Mr. Ford has agreed to protect the Greenbelt. Eighty-nine per cent of Ontarians support the Greenbelt and the protection it provides for farms, forests and natural areas. The best way to address housing prices and supply in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is by directing growth to existing urban areas, limiting sprawl, and building diverse housing options close to where people want to live and work.
