Media Advisory/Photo and Interview Opportunities: On Monday June 5th, Environmental Defence and Ecology Ottawa will deposit 400 wooden drift cards in the Rideau and Bonnechere Rivers to map the risks from an Energy East oil pipeline spill, spokespeople available

Ottawa, ON – On Monday, June 5th, World Environment Day, Environmental Defence and Ecology Ottawa will launch a drift card study to map the risks to the Ottawa River watershed from the proposed Energy East pipeline. To model the effect of a pipeline oil spill, 200 small wooden cards will be deposited in each of the Rideau and Bonnechere Rivers (400 cards total) near the site of the pipeline crossing. These drift cards have identification numbers and instructions so that when people find them, they can go to a website to enter their location as well as see the locations where other cards were found.

There will be a short presentation before the drift cards are deposited. Local stewardship groups will help place the cards in the river.

At the Rideau River only, local middle school students will also help place the drift cards in the river.

WHEN: Monday, June 5th, 2017, 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
