TORONTO, ON – The province of Ontario should be applauded for its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and investing in a low-carbon economy.

Climate change is one of the gravest threats facing Ontario. It’s encouraging to see this province face this threat head on, and embrace the opportunities inherent in the global transition to a low-carbon economy.

Ontario has shown leadership in tackling climate change. In this budget, Ontario has confirmed its intention to maintain this leadership role. Cap-and-trade has been on the radar in Ontario for nearly a decade. We applaud the province for moving forward with cap-and-trade today.

The commitment to directing the proceeds of cap-and-trade, projected to be nearly $500 million in fiscal 2016-2017 and $1.9 billion in 2017-2018, to mitigating carbon emissions will deliver many benefits to Ontarians. From cleaner air, to more energy efficient homes, to assistance with electric vehicles, taking action on climate change and enacting cap-and-trade isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s a good thing to do that will make life in this province better.
