There is no better place to be on a hot, sunny summer day than at the beach. The beach is not only a great place to beat the heat, but it’s also an opportunity to explore and spend time in nature.
To help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Blue Flag program in Canada, we’re once again hosting the annual Life’s a Beach Photo Contest. This year, we want to see the best your favourite Canadian beach has to offer – whether it’s the sun, sand, water, or the wildlife that call it home, show us the nature that makes the beach unique and beautiful. You could win up to $1,000 of brand new camera gear!
The Blue Flag is an internationally recognized and respected eco-label that is awarded to beaches and marinas that have achieved international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education, and safety and services. This year 24 beaches and four marinas in four provinces across Canada proudly fly the Blue Flag, joining an international community of more than 4,000 beaches and marinas around the world that have the eco-label.
The Blue Flag is more than just a designation. Protecting shorelines for future generations is an important part of the program, and Blue Flag communities have worked to restore coastal habitats and protect endangered species.
For example, Wasaga Beach has restored its sand dunes and has seen the return of nesting endangered piping plovers. The beach received a prestigious Environmental Commissioner of Ontario’s (ECO) 2013 Recognition Award for their role in protecting the piping plovers. Also, Sauble Beach, through collaborating with community partners, has restored its sand dunes, providing habitat for sensitive flora and fauna.
