Toronto, ON – We applaud Premier Kathleen Wynne for reintroducing this important Act that will make it illegal to burn coal to generate electricity in Ontario.
It’s great to see Ontario setting a bold example by kicking its coal habit – for good. Ontario still has a long way to go to meet its 2020 climate change targets, but the Act is a critical step in the right direction.
Closing coal-generating electricity stations is not only good for our shared climate, it has led to cleaner air. In 2005, Ontario had 53 smog days. In 2013, there were only two smog days and so far this year, there have been none.
Ontario’s leadership demonstrates that we can keep the lights on while building a clean economy and stepping away from polluting fossil fuels.
