Today’s report, the work of thousands of the world’s leading scientists who make up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is clearer than ever that the world needs to take urgent action to reduce carbon pollution. In response, we’ve released a new report, Reality Check: Climate Change and the Tar Sands, to make sure Canadians have access to good information about the root cause of the country’s failure to act on this urgent issue.
It’s time for a reality check: Canada cannot tackle climate change and pursue rapid tar sands growth. The tar sands are high cost, high risk, and high carbon. In a world on a carbon diet, these types of extreme energy sources will need to be the first to go.
Limiting global warming to less than two degrees Celsius is still possible, but only if countries step up in ways they never have in the past to reduce emissions and build advanced, cleaner energy economies.
The good news is that the solutions are at our fingertips – an advanced energy economy is all around us in the form of a burgeoning solar energy industry, electric vehicles and innovative smart grid technology.
