New campaign aims to make Canada a ‘litter-less’ place
Toronto, ON – Environmental Defence launches the ‘Litter Less’ competition today to encourage youth to envision Canada with a litter-free future, through the Foundation for Environmental Education’s Young Reporters for the Environment programme and the support of the Wrigley Company Foundation.
‘Litter Less’ is being implemented across 15 countries, including Canada, and aims to engage and educate Canadian youth on the issues of litter, encouraging them to make positive choices and inspire change through environmental journalism. The competition, open to students aged 12 to 18 through their school or club, is an opportunity for participants to contribute an article, photo or video about litter issues and solutions in their local communities.
To mark the launch, Environmental Defence is releasing a promotional video, spoofing a thriller movie trailer. The video offers teachers and organizers an innovative and light-hearted way to discuss the issue of litter, the need for solutions, and the competition details with their class. The trailer can be viewed at www.youngreporters.ca/litterless.
Commenting on the launch, Stephanie Kohls, communications director, Environmental Defence and Young Reporters for the Environment spokesperson said, “Litter is one of the first ways in which young people are educated about the environment, and it is usually one of the most visual issues in our community. Through the Litter Less campaign, Environmental Defence will be able to influence the education of students and teach them how to reduce this problem in a fun, action-oriented, way.”
Bryan Challis, a Wrigley Canada representative, added: “We are excited about the Litter Less campaign. Its hands on involvement of youth in creating a cleaner environment will promote a meaningful change in attitude towards littering.”
A national jury will select the top three submissions to represent Canada in the international Young Reporters competition. Canadian submissions will be eligible to win prizes such as a digital camera, pocket camcorder or a laptop. Schools can register until December 23, 2011, and competition entries will be accepted until April 30, 2012.
