Toronto – Environmental Defence, a Toronto-based environmental not-for-profit organization, and Stonechurch Vineyards, a winery in the Niagara Region, are pleased to announce the introduction of two new VQA wines to LCBO store shelves.
The winery’s 2008 Pinot Noir and its 2008 Sauvignon Blanc-Riesling are now sold in the lightweight ecologically friendly ECO bottle™ – a first in Ontario. In addition, the winery has committed to donating a portion of proceeds from each bottle sold to support Environmental Defence. The new bottles will feature Environmental Defence’s new logo, which is also featured in the organization’s newly-redesigned website, www.environmentaldefence.ca.
Environmental Defence has long been a passionate supporter of Ontario-grown wines. Thanks in large part to its highly-visible Put the “O” Back Into LCBO public outreach campaign, the Ontario government set a new direction in October 2009 by releasing a new plan for Ontario’s wine industry that encouraged wine production from Ontario-grown grapes.

“Supporting Ontario’s local farmers and wineries keeps our Greenbelt healthy, viable, and protected from encroaching development,” says Dr. Rick Smith, executive director of Environmental Defence.  “We applaud Stonechurch’s commitment to making wine from 100% locally-grown grapes and packaging it in a container with a smaller environmental footprint. In addition, we thank Stonechurch for donating a portion of proceeds to support our work.”

Stonechurch Vineyards, which has operated in Ontario’s heartland for decades, places a high value on protecting the environment. “As a family-owned winery, we recognize how important it is to carefully steward the land that nourishes us,” says Hank Hunse, president of Stonechurch Vineyards. “We’re also thrilled to be partnering with Environmental Defence to bring these two new Ontario wines to the LCBO.”

“Both wines come from quality local grapes grown in our vineyards, and they are both examples of great Ontario wines for which the VQA brand is known.”
