There are Blue Flags across Bruce, Grey and Simcoe Counties.
A number of beaches in the region are flying the Blue Flag after receiving certification Wednesday from Environmental Defence.
They are Sauble Beach, Station Beach in Kincardine and Wasaga Beach Provincial Park — the first Ontario park to receive the blue flag.
The environmental advocacy group started the international program to recognize clean beaches,
Each location must meet 27 strict standards based on water quality, environmental management and education as well as safety.
Program Manager Sarah Winterton tells Bayshore Broadcasting News there is an actual blue flag that will fly at all locations.
Winterton notes this is actually the second year for the designation at Sauble Beach.
An additional five beaches have been singled out as Blue Flag candidates for next year.
That list includes Little River Beach Park in the Town of the Blue Mountains, Northwinds Beach Park near Collingwood and Rotary Cove Beach in Goderich.
