To: The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health
We cant believe that heavy metals are contaminating our cosmetics and personal care products, and that consumers cant possibly know about it, because they're impurities not listed on the labels.
To help us make healthier purchasing decisions we ask that you:
- Take cumulative exposure into account and strengthen the Draft Guidance on Heavy Metal Impurities to reflect levels that are actually technically avoidable, referencing the most recent science and staying on top of it. Allowable impurity limits for lead are currently 10ppm, which is far too high given that there is no safe exposure to lead.
- Finalize the guidelines, make them clearly legally enforceable, and enforce them. These guidelines have been in draft form since March 2009. Its time to finalize and enforce them. Our testing found levels of heavy metal impurities that exceeded the Canadian guidelines, yet all of the products we tested were purchased in Canada.
- Require full disclosure: Manufacturers or distributors should disclose all substances, intentional ingredients and unintentional ingredients (e.g., impurities), in their products without exception, both freely online before products hit the market and on labels.
In strengthening and enforcing Canada's regulation of heavy metal impurities, and ensuring that you and we are told everything, you will help us all be safe and Just Beautiful.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
