NEWS AND UPDATES
Comments on the GTA West Corridor due by June 30!
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MOT) is planning a new super-highway through one of the most sensitive parts of the Greenbelt. As it stands, the proposed “Greenbelt Expressway” will cut through the City of Vaughan and negatively impact the Greenbelt and the Natural Heritage System, encompassing the Purpleville Creek headwaters (endangered red side dace habitat), the East Humber River and the Cold Creek area. The area also includes prime agricultural lands.
It's not too late to make your voice heard. Click here and demand that MOT explore better alternatives.

New listserv for Global Greenbelts Network
In March, over 200 delegates from around the world gathered for the first Global Greenbelts Conference in Toronto. A resounding message from the Conference was that greenbelts provide many essential benefits to the people who live and work in greenbelts and surrounding communities, such as: clean air; clean water; fresh, healthy local food; flood protection; nature experience; outdoor education and recreation; and cultural heritage protection. These greenbelt functions are vital to society and even more so in light of changing global conditions such as water scarcity, population growth, climate change, and rising oil prices.
The result of the Conference was a call to action to establish a Global Greenbelts Network to collaborate and provide support to emerging and existing greenbelts by sharing research, planning tools, technical expertise, and lessons learned.
