Protecting the Great Lakes - Safeguarding Canada's Water

Climate change, invasive species, pollution and pharmaceuticals are just a few of the things putting our Great Lakes under great stress. If kept unchecked, these will result in water that is unsafe to fish, drink or swim in, and can’t support the species that live there. That's why we're working with citizens and the government to secure a new Great Lakes Protection Act.

In February 2013, the Ontario government re-introduced the Great Lakes Protection Act, Bill 6. Until April 26th, the government is consulting the public on the Act. Click the link above for the latest status of the bill, and to see who’s saying what about the bill.

The Great Lakes Protection Act presents an opportunity to stop polluting and to start restoring the source of drinking water for 80 per cent of Ontarians. We want to see an Act that helps communities deal with major stress on the Lakes, protects vulnerable wetlands, sets clear targets and makes sure the public is kept up to date on the health of the Great Lakes.
