Pollution in your family's bodies...
If you're looking to reduce the pollution in your families' bodies, we're on your side. We've put together a list of the toxic ten ingredients to avoid, and we've packaged it in a handy pocket guide [PDF] so you can carry it with you to the store. You'll also find more information in our resources section about how to find products that are safe. But, keeping your family safe from toxins can't only happen at the store. We believe companies and governments owe it to Canadians to make products that are safe.
What we can do...
The Just Beautiful Campaign educates Canadians about the harmful chemicals that can be found in their personal care products and shows ways to reduce that pollution. We are encouraging the federal government to ban known-to-be-harmful ingredients in our products and demand full disclosure of what’s in the products on Canadian shelves. We are also working with cosmetics companies on safer alternatives.
Why us?
Environmental Defence is just the organization to take on this difficult job. We've been working to protect Canadians from pollution in people for years. We have conducted body burden studies, which found that Canadians have chemicals such as lead, flame retardants, pesticides and stain repellents in their bodies in levels that are not healthy. In 2008, we led the successful charge to get toxic bisphenol A (BPA) out of baby bottles in Canada, and this chemical has since been declared a toxic substance. We also educated Canadians about the need to improve Canada's consumer product safety legislation in 2010.
What you can do...
We could never have made these gains without the action and voices of Canadians who care about their families' health and safety. And, now we need your help.
