(This is an excerpt from a blog post written by our Executive Director this week. Read the rest of the post here.)
It is with sadness that we remember Jack Layton, an avid friend of the environment and an incredibly hardworking political leader, for his larger than life spirit, his political passion, his dedication to Canadians and his courage in the face of tribulations.
Jack’s sudden passing is a tragic loss for Canada and for the environmental community. For close to a decade, Jack has been the face of the federal New Democratic Party, fighting to bring attention to and change to often controversial environmental issues.

The dog days of summer are not yet over! Here's our guide to wrapping up the summer in style:
Step 1. Visit a Blue Flag beach and say bye-bye to the days of beaches contaminated with toxins. We've come a long way and we're proud of it!
2. Slap on some non-toxic sunscreen and get comfortable.
3. Snap a picture of your friends and family hanging out on your favourite Canadian beach and send it to us before September 6 for a chance to win a digital SLR camera (est. value $500)! Visit flickr.com/groups/beachphotocontest for contest information.

Wiping the peach juice dripping down your face and hands is the surest sign of summer we can think of. But do you know where these delectable delights come from? If you live in Ontario, there’s a good chance that they were harvested in Ontario’s Greenbelt, 1.8 million acres of protected green space surrounding the Greater Toronto Area. (It also happens to be the world’s largest greenbelt - that’s something to be proud of, Canada!).
Celebrate the Greenbelt with us this summer by taking part in our giant Greenbelt map game tour! Find us next at the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic, then follow us on twitter and facebook to see where the Greenbelt game will be stopping next. Learn something new, and you might just win a prize too!
