The Campaign

For the Lake Simcoe region, development and sprawl puts safe drinking water at greater risk by removing the trees, wetlands and natural greenery that keep water safe and clean. It means air pollution as wetlands, forests and working farms are paved over for poorly planned growth. Rising phosphorus levels and poor sewage planning in and around the lake lead to declining fish populations and beach closures. And, by threatening green spaces on which the tourism, agricultural, and recreational industries depend, it puts the region's prosperity in jeopardy.

Environmental Defence has played a key role in establishing the Lake Simcoe Protection Act and the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, which create a natural heritage system and watershed protection area for Lake Simcoe and the Nottawasaga River. And, while this is a major victory for us, it's not over yet.

We're still working to keep development in the lake region in check. And we're helping residents to promote clean air and water by reducing phosphorus use and cutting down on traffic. Find out more on the Lake Simcoe website.
