While summer brings sun and swimming, it also brings swatting, as mosquitoes and black flies rise from lakes to feast on their favourite mammals. While there is some concern about diseases borne by mosquitoes, for the most part, these biting insects are an itchy annoyance rather than a threat to the health of Canadians. That’s not the case with DEET, however. This common bug spray ingredient has been linked to a host of health problems, including liver and brain toxicity, and skin irritation.

But how do you keep the insects away without slathering yourself in toxic sprays and lotions? The good news is that there are safe alternatives, both chemical and practical.

Avoidance

Start by being bug smart. Clear any standing water that might near your home; this will reduce mosquito breeding grounds. Most biting insects feed at dawn and dusk, so if you’ll be out at these times, wear long sleeves and pants, and avoid wearing products with fragrance. Heavy scents in your personal care products will attract insects!

Safe Alternatives

Lemon eucalyptus oil and soybean oil based bug repellents are non-toxic alternatives to traditional DEET based products. Soybean oil is especially effective.

Among companies that have taken the Just Beautiful Pledge, Graydon by Clinical Luxury and Green Beaver both offer excellent outdoor lotions that will keep the bugs away, while being good to your skin.

Bug bites are nasty, but there’s no need to poison yourself to keep them away while you play.
