This April 30th marked final date of Canada’s first year of participation in the 25 country competition, Young Reporters for the Environment.
Our national round,
Canada’s Next Green Journalist, received submissions from nearly every Canadian province and territory. We spent weeks scouring articles, videos and photos before deciding on
our winners.
Now that those winning entries have been sent to the international competition, we’ve realizing two major things.
One, that Canada has some of the most talented youth in the world. Two, that we obviously have excellent judgement.
We’re very happy to announce that three of our international submissions won prizes on the international stage!
Lucia DeMarco’s "The 3 R's: Remove Radon Refuse", won First Place for an article by ages 18-21.
Jennifer Taylor’s “Bottle” (above) won Third Place for a photograph by ages 18-21.
And last but not least, Becca Williams’ "One plant at a time" won Best Overall Video!
Managed by the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), these three were award by a panel that included Ming Kuok Lim from UNESCO; Khairoon Abbas from UNEP; Chanell Daniels from EEA; Torvald Jacobsson from IIIEE; and Ron Lewis from The Times newspaper.
Impressed? So are we!
Jealous? Don’t be!
This may be our first year, but we’re pretty sure we’re on a roll...
