With longer days, and warmer weather, Canadians are daydreaming about that perfect beach vacation, or much-anticipated boating adventure. And we have some good news for you: there are more beaches and marinas receiving the Blue Flag than ever before!

This year, 26 beaches and seven marinas from British Columbia to Nova Scotia are being recognized as the best-of-the-best. In order to receive a Blue Flag, beaches and marinas must meet a set of strict criteria under four categories: Environmental Education, Environmental Management, Water Quality, and Safety & Services.

We’re happy to welcome two new beaches and one marina to the Blue Flag family—including our first west coast flag.

These three destinations join more than 4,000 beaches and marinas in 49 countries that have demonstrated a commitment to people and the environment in order to receive the Blue Flag.

Blue Flag is an international eco-award that originated in France in 1987, and is run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In Canada, Environmental Defence is the national operator of the program.

Environmental education is a key part of Blue Flag. Visitors are encouraged to connect with the natural environment – splash in the water, play with the sand, learn about the local birds, plants and underwater creatures, and take actions to support the long-term health of the shoreline. Together, our network of Blue Flags is working to ensure Canada’s beaches, lakes, and coasts can be enjoyed for generations to come.

So, the next time you’re thinking about that perfect boating or beach vacation, check out the beaches and marinas listed on blueflag.ca or blueflag.global and choose to visit a Blue Flag destination. You know it will be well maintained, managed responsibly, and a great spot to spend some quality time with your friends and family.

Time to grab your sunblock and hit the sand. Blue Flag season starts now!
