Toronto, ON – IPCC’s latest report is another stark reminder of what is at stake if Canada and other countries fail to act decisively to fight climate change.
The report states with more certainty than ever before that unless we take urgent steps to move away from burning fossil fuels, we are on track to create a world that you wouldn’t wish upon your worst enemy. Over the last year, we have seen what one degree centigrade of global warming looks like; unprecedented floods, devastating forest fires, and deathly heat waves. In addition to ruining lives and livelihoods, these extreme weather events have cost billions of dollars.
Every year of inaction to meaningfully reduce carbon emissions makes it harder to avoid catastrophic global warming. It doesn’t have to be this way. We have the tools to move towards a clean, safe and renewable energy future, and political leaders have the power to make good decisions that could change the course for our environment. The decisions include the pending U.S. decision to approve or reject the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, and the long-awaited federal regulations governing emissions from the oil and gas industry in Canada.
