Toronto– Environmental Defence congratulated the Ontario government today for its leadership in making a major commitment to public transit investment and positive targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
Premier McGuinty’s climate change and transit announcements, including the regulated shutdown of coal plants, are of national significance. “With Ontario joining the majority of other provinces that have already pledged significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, the stage is now set for Alberta and the federal government to explain why the oil and gas industry – especially the Alberta tar sands – is being permitted to dramatically expand its greenhouse gas emissions while the rest of the country are decreasing theirs,” said Dr. Rick Smith, Executive Director, Environmental Defence.
